Ports
Port Said
is a northeastern Egyptian city near the Suez Canal. Port Said has an estimated population of 500,000 inhabitants. The economic base of Port Said is fishing and industries, like chemicals, processed food, and cigarettes. Port Said is also an important harbor both for exports of Egyptian products like cotton and rice, but also a fuelling station for ships that pass through the Suez Canal.
Sharm el-Sheikh
is a city located on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, in Janub Sina', Egypt, on the coastal strip between the Red Sea and Mount Sinai. Sharm el-Sheikh is the administrative hub of Egypt's Southern Sinai province which includes the smaller coastal towns of Dahab and Nuweiba as well as the mountainous interior, Saint Catherine's Monastery and Mount Sinai.
Suez Canal, Egypt
The Suez Canal runs 100 miles between the sand dunes of the Sinai Peninsula and the Nile River delta. Cruise ships often dock toward the canal's north end at Port Said, a gateway to Cairo. From the port of Safaga at the south end, passengers are offered shore excursions to the ancient city of Luxor, where Tutankhamen was entombed.
Petra (Aqaba), Jordan
Named for the Greek word meaning "rock," Petra was a flourishing trade center in ancient times and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore on foot or horseback the 2,000-year-old structures built into soaring salmon-pink sandstone.
Luxor (Safaga), Egypt
This small port city on the western shore of the Red Sea is a gateway to Luxor and all of the splendid Egyptian temples, tombs and ruins found there. After experiencing the sights on the east bank (including Karnak and the Luxor temples and Luxor Museum) cruise across the Nile to the west bank (where sights include the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Queen Hashepsut).
Muscat, Oman
The capital of Oman touts itself as one of the cleanest cities in the world. Installed on the rocky shoreline are three forts built during the Portuguese occupation of the country in the late 1500s. Cultural attractions include an aquarium displaying native specimens, the history-heavy Oman Museum, the National Museum and the Sultan's Armed Forces Museum.
Salalah, Oman
Discover Salalah by driving into East Salalah and the surrounding area to see the contrast between the lush vegetation of the garden city and the barren, bleak landscape of the desert. After leaving the port, the tour begins with a visit to the Taqa. Camels may be seen roaming the roadside as you drive toward the fishing village of Taqa, an old town with an interesting fort and typical houses belonging to the local fishermen. Note the elegant and heat-resistant white stones used to build Taqah's houses.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
The chief port and commercial center of the United Arab Emirates, Dubai is a cosmopolitan yet exotic city. Wander the stalls of the traditional bazaars, called souks, where you can bargain for gold jewelry, Persian and Afghani rugs and more. Gold is a particularly good buy here. A guided city tour may take in the Dubai Museum, housed in the Al Fahidi Fort, Dubai's oldest building; the Juneira Mosque, Dubai's most-photographed structure (particularly beautiful after dark when it is illuminated); and the World Trade Center, one of the highest buildings in the Middle East. Along the way, you'll see the palaces of the ruling family and, in Dubai's oldest quarter, the houses of wealthy merchants. Other excursions can include four-wheel-drive adventures in the desert, visits to Bedouin camps and even an opportunity to ride a camel.
