THE HISTORY
Typifying the post-World War I phase of Great Camp architecture, The Point was built in 1933 for William Avery Rockefeller. The Adirondack Great Camps. Built along rugged shorelines between ancient forests and shining mountain lakes, in the late 1800s and the early part of this century, were sumptuous retreats for the very wealthy and their friends. None was more lavish or expressed more fully the collage of mountain charm and luxury sought by their owners than The Point. Painstakingly constructed on ten acres of peninsula stretching into Upper Saranac Lake, The Point was originally Camp Wonundra, the home of William Avery Rockefeller. There, in the heart of the vast Adirondack wilderness, he lived quietly and entertained in the gracious style of The Great Camp era. The Point combines that tradition of honoring guests with its unique combination of warm hospitality, grace and rustic elegance.
DINING ~ THE FINEST CUISINE
We are proud to offer our guests some of the finest cuisine in the world. Our executive chef and his entire kitchen staff have been trained under the culinary guidance of Albert Roux, a world-renowned, three-star Michelin chef based in London. You may have your meal in bed, at a table overlooking the lake or before a fire. Wonderful food and very special company enrich every evening at The Point. All of our meals are planned at least a week in advance, taking into account dietary restrictions and food allergies of each guest. Every meal you have at The Point will have been specially prepared, made from ingredients flown in from as far away as Scotland; so we ask that you notify us well in advance of your personal requirements. The Point offers world-class cuisine served 'en famille': there is no menu and guests sit down together, family-style, for lunch at 1 p.m. and dinner at 8 p.m. If you prefer, you may dine in front of the fireplace in your room, or have a picnic lunch packed for you to take on a hike or canoe trip. In the morning, we will deliver a continental breakfast to your room, or a cooked-to-order breakfast to your table in the Great Hall.
